In this series on Christian philosophy, I think a warning is necessary.
Let's consider a question we asked earlier: what is philosophy? Philosophy is the love of wisdom. It is loving wisdom.
And, again, what is Christian? That is, what does "Christian" mean when it's a description of anything? It's something that is "according to Christ," or that aligns with Christ.
So, with all that said, what is Christian philosophy? It is Christianly loving wisdom, or a distinctly Christian love of wisdom. Not only is the love here distinctly Christian, but the wisdom itself is distinctly Christian. And Christian philosophy is not one philosophy among many, but it's the true philosophy, because its Source is the Truth Himself (John 14:6; cf. John 17:17). And what does Christ teach us is wisdom? Through Paul, His apostle (1 Corinthians 1:1), the Lord Jesus Christ teaches us that He Himself is the Wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24). So, Christian philosophy is loving Christ as Wisdom. [1]
Why return to and walk again through all that familiar territory? In Christian philosophy, there's a danger: the belief that merely having Biblical thoughts on wisdom is Christian philosophy. No, Christian philosophy is trusting and loving a Person, because a Person (a Divine Person) is Wisdom! Let all then who study Christian philosophy be careful, ensuring that their focus is on the Person of Wisdom rather than on wisdom as an impersonal, abstract thing! What then is the solution to this reductionism? Whenever you see any example of (Biblically defined) wisdom in either Scripture or your life, recognize that you are seeing a picture (albeit a faint image) of Christ Himself [2], and may the beauty of that picture cause your heart to trust and love Him more and more! If your "Christian philosophy" is not causing this in your heart, it is useless!
