Proverbs 10:7 says: “The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.” So, what picture of Christ do we have here?
Let’s start with the first clause, as usual. “The memory of the just is blessed.” As we covered in the previous post of this Proverbs series, Christ is the Just, “Just” also meaning “Righteous.”[1] So, to say that the memory of the just is blessed is to say that the memory of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself is blessed. And since this proverb is obviously a contrast between two kinds of people, to say that Christ’s memory is blessed is to say that, instead of rotting like the name of the wicked, it will flourish like a flourishing plant.[2]
Now, let’s move onto the second clause. “[B]ut the name of the wicked shall rot.” Given both the fact that “name” here is compared (albeit by way of contrast) with “memory” and the fact that “name” can mean “reputation,”[3] to say that the name of the wicked will rot is to say that the wicked man’s reputation shall suffer ruin because of his wickedness. And since the “wicked” is contrasted with the “just” here, the wicked is anyone who is unjust. To state it further, the wicked are those who live in disobedience to God’s Law.[4]
And, again, since we have a picture of Christ here, we have also a picture of the Christian (the true Christian, that is). Reader, is the direction of your life one of love-based obedience to God’s Word[5], or disregard for His Law? The answer to that question is the answer to the question of whether you are a true Christian or not! And it is also the answer to the question of whether your memory (i.e., the remembrance of you) will be blessed or, instead, your name will rot!
