Proverbs 6:16-19 is a well-known passage of Scripture. It reads: "These six things doth the LORD hate: Yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, Feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, And he that soweth discord among brethren" (KJV).
Though you may know this scripture well, have you considered what it implies? What I mean is, if God hates these seven things, wouldn't it be that, logically, He loves their opposites? Let's rewrite this passage as seven things God loves, substituting the listed wicked qualities with their opposites, seeing what it looks like to put off godlessness and put on godliness!
These six things does the LORD love:
Yes, seven are a delight to Him:
A humble look
A truthful tongue
And hands that sustain life
A heart that devises righteous imaginations
Feet that are swift in running to goodness
A true witness that speaks truths
And he that sows unity among brethren
Don't these characteristics align with the ideal that God's Word says Christians are to strive for in their hearts and lives?
"Yes, but how do I cultivate these virtues?"
It's simple: believe in Jesus Christ, as the Bible reveals Him! Trust in the Son of God, as God's Word unveils Him! And, by that trust, meditate on His perfect moral character (2 Corinthians 3:18), counting yourself as dead to sin and alive to righteousness (Romans ch. 6; 1 Peter 2:21-24)! And, also by that faith, out of the overflow of good things that are in your heart (Matthew 3:8-10, 7:15-27, 12:33-37; Acts 26:19-20) by that believing meditation, do good works, which are the works that God commands you, through Scripture, to do!
