In this blog post, we will examine what Psalm 4 says about the characteristics of God.
So, as always, first things first: read Psalm 4!
Now, let's examine, verse by verse, what the psalm says about God! Verse 1 says that God is the God of David's (who is the psalm's human author) righteousness, the One who enlarged him when he was in distress, and the One who has mercy upon him and hears his prayer. Verse 3 says YAHWEH has set apart the godly man for Himself and that He will hear when David calls to Him. Verse 5 says that YAHWEH is the One to whom the sacrifices of righteousness are to be offered and the One whom is to be trusted. Verse 6 says that YAHWEH is the only One who can show man any good by lifting the light of His face upon them. Verse 7 says God is the One who has put gladness in David's heart more than in the time that people's corn and wine increased. Verse 8 says that YAHWEH is the One (indeed, the only One) who allows David to lie down in peace and sleep by making him dwell in safety.
Now, I know a lot of the attributes I listed here touch on God's relationship with David as the human writer of Psalm 4, but 1) this information is part of the original, historical context of this psalm and 2) this information is actually all the more encouragement to Christians because David, in the times where his heart is godly like here in Psalm 4, is an example of the godly man (remember verse 3!). So, I pray this post is a blessing to you, believing reader!
