The time period that is often referred to as the "Age of Enlightenment" is seen, by many anti-Christians, as the era where the darkness of ignorance (which, they claim, is embodied in religion) was overcome by the light of knowledge (which, they claim, is embodied in secular humanist epistemology). Obviously, this framing is false, but that's not why I bring it up here. No, I bring it up as a springboard to the theme of this paper, which I will expound on in the following paragraph.
God is Light (1 John 1:5). The Bible, being God's Word (2 Timothy 3:15-17), is also light (Psalm 119:105), since it is the means by which God communicates with mankind. Darkness, therefore, since it is, by definition, the opposite of light, is what is opposed to God. With all that in mind, when God the Son was sent by God the Father into this world to be conceived by God the Holy Spirit in a virgin's womb and be born through that virgin, the Son, while keeping His Divine nature, gained a sinless human nature. In other words, God the Son, who is Light, became Man. To put it yet another way, Light became incarnate. This was the dawn of the true enlightenment. This is when the actual Light shone and drove away the genuine darkness. Because, in reality, light is not knowledge (unless we're talking about believing knowledge of God) and darkness is not ignorance (unless we're talking about ignorance of God and His Son). No, rather, light is godliness (or, conformity to God) and darkness is godlessness (or, lack of conformity to God). When Christ came, the Light had long last came! And though darkness still permeates the unsaved world, when Christ's Kingdom reaches its consummation in the New Heavens and the New Earth (Revelation chs. 21-22), light will cover the restored creation as, to use the words of Habakkuk 2:14, "...the waters cover the sea." Believer, rejoice in the enlightenment you possess in Jesus! Unbeliever, repent (i.e., change your mind) and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, especially but not limited to His perfect salvific work on your behalf! Do this by switching your trust from wherever you have currently placed it and place your trust instead on the Lord Jesus Christ, trusting the Bible alone since it is the way He communicates to you!
Christians, let's shine forth the Light's glories through our praise of Him!!!

Joe, this week's post is such an encouragement. God is light and in Him is no darkness. I pray that this post brings glory to God and brings someone to faith in Jesus Christ!
