Self-deprecating humor is humor that “focuses on the shortcomings of a particular character or performer” [1]. So, how can self-deprecating humor be used to glorify God? In other words, how can self-deprecating humor be employed to make known the truth about God (Luke 23:47)?
A person can glorify God through self-deprecating humor in this way: highlighting his shortcomings while contrasting them with God’s strengths. Qualities are often shown in a clearer light when contrasted with their opposites. So it is with God’s successes against the backdrop of man’s failures.
Since examples can demonstrate things clearer than descriptions can, let’s use one! Say a Christian comic gets up in front of a crowd on open-mic night. He says “One time, I had this job as a security guard at a bank. I said that I was the most vigilant guard they would ever find and that they could rest easy knowing their money was under my care. Unfortunately, I fell asleep that night. And, as for the money, let’s just say it wouldn’t be a burden on the bank anymore. But you know who literally NEVER sleeps, is ETERNALLY vigilant, and PERFECTLY guards EVERYTHING in His care? God! And you know what happens when we put our trust in other people and other things? It’s like we’re entrusting our money with a sleepy security guard!”
Here is how God can be glorified through self-deprecating humor!
