In John 9:36, we find the fiftieth occurrence of the idea of faith in John’s Gospel. The text says: “He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?” (KJV). So, as always, what is the context of this passage and what are some facts about faith we can learn from this passage?

So, what is the context of John 9:36? This will be another one of those short context analyses, which will be brief but nonetheless necessary. As we covered in the previous post, Jesus found out about how the Pharisees cast the formerly blind man out of the synagogue after he gave his defense of Christ before the Pharisees. Hearing this news, He finds the man and asks him if he believes on the Son of God. In response, the man asks who He is, that he might believe on Him. This is the context of John 9:36!

So, what are some facts about faith that John 9:36 can provide us? The one truth I can glean from this text is this: there is someone or something that each of us puts our confidence in. And it is our choice who we put our trust in. The question is: who or what will be put our belief in: the one true God of the Bible, the Creator, or the creation? Those are our only two options (Romans 1:16-25). [1] Who or what are you trusting, reader? This is a fact about faith we can draw from John 9:36!

[1] The fact that you either worship the Creator or His creation was pointed out compellingly to me in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilcq_hhqy38.
