Whatever a man looks to as his god is many things to him. His god is his love, his goal, his intellectual authority, his moral authority, his best friend, and many other such ultimate things to him. Another thing a god is to its adherent is his identity-determiner. More specifically, what a man embraces as his god determines what he sees himself to be.
Moving from the general to the specific, we Christians, who trust the God of the Bible and the Biblical God only, look to Him as our Identity-Determiner.
First, the God of the Bible has determined our identity by creating us. He has made us and describes in His Written Word (i.e. the Bible) who we are and what we are to do.
Second, God the Father, the first Person of the Triune God of the Bible, has determined our identity by what He has done for us by His Son, the second Person of the Trinity. His Son became a Man, the Lord Jesus Christ, and obeyed the Father all the way to His death on the cross, in which death Christ bore and took away the sins of all who would ever trust Him. Three days after His death, Christ rose from the dead and later ascended to the right hand of the Father, where He is today. All the lives of true Christians are hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:1-3). Therefore, all that God’s Word says we are because we’re united to Christ by trust in Him, we are in reality. The same God who spoke reality into being by His Word (Genesis ch. 1), speaks these things about our identity in Christ, thereby ensuring they comprise our real identity.
What are these things? It would take forever to go through all of them, but let’s consider only a few things: we are children of God the Father (John 1:12), we are light (Ephesians 5:8), followers of God’s Word (1 John 2:3), forgiven of all our sins (Colossians 1:13-14), reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:18), a royal priesthood to God (1 Peter 2:9), a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9), loving (1 John 4:7), merciful (Matthew 5:7), and so much more! Christian, what does God’s Written Word say you are because you are in Christ through faith in Christ? That is what you truly are!
Christian, DO NOT look to yourself, the world, or anyone or anything else besides God to know what your identity is! If you trust and follow the God of the Bible only, this is who you are! Take joy in this and glorify God for giving you this new identity in Christ!

This post really does show how our identity as Christians is truly in Christ and Christ alone.
